Ndola Woman Jailed for Assaulting Sister’s Lover THE Ndola Magistrate’s Court has slapped a six-month suspended simple imprisonment sentence on a 36-year-old woman of Pamodzi township in Ndola for assaulting her younger sister’s lover. Before magistrate Misozi Banda on Wednesday was Florence Chanda of house number 2826 who admitted assaulting Chiwayu Kaluba. Passing the sentence, Ms Banda said the increase in the number of assault cases in Ndola is alarming and it is the duty of the court to punish perpetrators to deter would-be offenders. “I have heard your mitigation and I further note that you are a first offender who admitted the charge without wasting the court’s time. however, cases of assault are on the increase in this district and as courts, we will impose punishment in order to deter people from such tendencies. “In this regard, I sentence you to six months simple imprisonment with effect from July 16, this year, the day on which you were arrested. I, nevertheless, suspend the sentence for one year within which you should not commit a similar offence or you will be brought back to serve the sentence,” Ms Banda said. Chanda on July 16 this year, in Ndola, assaulted Mr Kaluba. In mitigation, Chanda asked the court to be lenient on her because she is expecting and she is unwell. Facts before the court read by public prosecutor Sandi Munyeme were that on the fateful day around 17:00 hours, Mr Kaluba was drinking beer at a bar in Chifubu township when Chanda, in the company of her sister, went there and started mocking him. The court heard that when Mr Kaluba tried to inquire about why Chanda and her sister were being provocative, she hit him with an unknown object on the head and sustained a cut on the forehead. Mr Kaluba reported the matter to Chifubu Police Station and Chanda was apprehended.
