Ndola man jailed 2 yrs for stabbing cop A 28-YEAR-OLD man of Masala in Ndola has been sentenced to two years imprisonment with hard labour for stabbing and wounding a police officer. This is in a case in which Richard Maida was charged with unlawful wounding, contrary to Section 232 (a) of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia. Particulars of the offence are that Maida on May 6, 2013 in Ndola, did unlawfully wound Sansalimba Simpokolwe, a police officer from the crime prevention unit at Kantolomba Police Post in Ndola. The court had earlier convicted Maida of escaping from lawful custody. Passing the sentence on Friday, Ndola magistrate Bubala Sikalunda said Maida had no legal right to stab Mr Simpokolwe and that the offence he committed is serious. Ms Sikalunda also said Maida is not realistic because he decided to escape from lawful custody while facing a serious charge of unlawful wounding. “I have taken into account the fact that you are a serving convict but I have also taken into account that you are a first offender of a case of this nature. “However, you committed a serious offence by stabbing the complainant, adding another offence to the already existing one,” Ms Sikalunda said. She added: “I, therefore, sentence you to 24 months imprisonment with hard labour from the date of your arrest.” Facts before the court were that on the material day, a team of police officers from Kansenshi Police Station went to Kantolomba to look for Maida and another suspect only identified as Mantoshi, who had escaped from police cells. The court heard that Mr Simpokolwe reinforced the search party, which later found Mantoshi and Maida. The court heard that Maida challenged and stabbed Mr Simpokolwe before he was apprehended.Ytee
