Near the end of Colossians 1, Paul tells the church that he suffered afflictions for the body of Christ, the church. We do not always like to talk about suffering and afflictions being a part of the calling for all Christians. At times we are led to believe that part of our Christian faith is to keep us from any suffering and pain. Yet, in being like Christ in the world, we will ultimately find some sort of affliction. Jesus spent His life giving of Himself because of His great love. When He was tired and desired to rest, He still went to help those who came to Him in need. He wept and prayed for those who He encountered in times of grief. He was often frustrated and aggravated because of the inability of His followers to understand what He taught them. He feared for them when He knew He would be crucified and they would be without Him to protect and guide them. He endured opposition, hatred, and even the cross, all in the mission to prove the love of God to the world and save the lost. We are all called to love as Christ loved, and to continue His mission to prove God’s love for the world and save the lost. If we are to have the same mission, have the same outlook on life, and behave in the same way, why do we expect results that are far different than Christ’s. Truly living as Christ and being in Him, we will face hardships for the cause, but we can always look forward to being witnesses to the transforming work of God and the eternal glory we will share with our Lord.
