Nearly finished volume 2 of Guralniks biography of Elvis Presley. A tragic tale for sure. My interest keeps going back to Colonel Tom Parker , his manager, a southerner and Dutch. What a combination! His past life and emigration is somewhat obscure, even mysterious (as people with a carnival background sometimes are). In many ways maligned he was never the less a brilliant salesman -who could wring vast amounts of money from record and film companies- and a complete bastard and a mad gambler. I thought it is he rather than Elvis who could do with a miniseries. A perfect subject for a some great American character actor like Johnny Depp. Johnny Depp as Colonel Tom Parker, thats it.
