Needles The original needles used by Native Americans were more like awls in that they were larger and more blunt than sewing needles. While the needles were usually made of animal bone, thorns were sometimes used. Thread Thread and lacing in traditional Native American projects came from sinew made from animal tendons harvested primarily from the spinal columns of animals hunted for food. Some tribes also used thread made from plant roots and other fibers. Decorations In early Native American sewing, decorative items were created from whatever natural materials were on hand. These included porcupine quills, shells, stones such as turquoise, copper, silver, wood, and items from animals, including bone and horn.
