Negotiations over the future of Australias Renewable Energy Target (RET) have broken down, with Labor telling the Government there is no value in continuing discussions. For several weeks the Opposition and Coalition have been meeting to discuss the future of the RET, which currently aims to ensure 20 per cent of electricity comes from renewable sources by 2020. The Abbott government wants to reduce the target, arguing overall household consumption has fallen, but Opposition environment spokesman Mark Butler said the Governments fundamental position remained a 40 per cent cut to the RET, which Labor would not support.
