Neighbors, I want to let you know one of the matriarchs of the neighborhood, if not THE matriarch of Eola Heights, Alyene Hays, has died. You will find her obituary in todays (Mon.) paper. She was 96 and in her 72 years (since 1942) of living on her lovely brick street, she saw many changes. In her younger years she established Girl Scout Troop 74 meeting at Broadway Methodist Church and for over 20 years nurtured many girls who grew up here. She was active in the neighborhood schools, Hillcrest and Howard and gave away many a bush or tree from her yard which one can still see growing in the hood. She planted over 25 native trees in her yard to welcome birds and butterflies. She was an avid supporter for establishing Eola Heights as ann Historic District. Our family, including her grandson and great grandson remains in Eola Heights. You have probably seen me taking Charlie in his vintage tin stroller on walks on the same sidewalks and same stroller Mom went with me. Moms Celebration of Life will be at Broadway Methodist Church this Sat. the 18th at 11:00 A.M. Written by Julia Hays Rowe, the oldest daughter.
