Never have I been much of sports spectator, so the World Cup television extravaganza has passed me by. I apologize if that bothers you. (I am, however, an aging, somewhat talented athlete. I hope that helps you judge me less harshly.) I cannot ignore the World Cup completely, though, because my son in law has been traveling around the globe for about a year writing remarkable stories about World Cup teams and players and coaches and controversies and national moods. His name is Wright Thompson, he is perhaps the most extraordinary magazine writer alive, and sometimes he causes me to laugh even though Im not watching the World Cup games.
