Neville Ladies & Gentlemen Split at Wossman... Monroe, LA Montrail Etson’s late-game heroics electrified the home crowd and allowed Wossman to walk out of the George “Vamp” Belton Sports Complex on Friday night with a 66-65 win over district rival Neville. With three seconds remaining in the game, Etson pulled down a rebound and laid it in while also drawing the “and-1” foul. He may have missed the ensuing free throw, but it was enough to get the Wildcats (18-3) to 1-0 in District 2-4A. “The team needed me to come through in the clutch, and I came through,” Etson said. “I put it on my back to seal the deal, and I did it.” The Tigers (12-6) had success for most of the game by spreading the floor and penetrating with guards Kavontae Turpin and Leon Smith, forcing Wossman into a 1-3-1 zone. Neville remained ahead for the first three quarters of play and took a five-point advantage into the three-minute mark. LaQuentin Collins kept the ‘Cats in the game with five consecutive points until Etson knocked down a three-pointer that made it a two-point game with 2:44 left. Neville had a shot to put the game away in the final minutes, but kept Wossman down just one possession by going 2-5 at the free throw line. With the score 65-64 and 17 seconds remaining, Deshun Roberson stepped to the line with a shot to put the Tigers up three, but missed both free throws. Down to their final possession, Collins and Jarvis Dean missed their initial shots, but Etson was there for the board and the lay-in. “This time of the year you take (the wins) any way you can get them,” Wossman boys coach Ronnie Wilson said. “We showed a lot of character, and we never quit. This is one of the nights where it came through for us.” Etson finished with 16 points, and Collins continued his double-double streak by posting 18 and 11 rebounds. Leon Smith finished as the top scorer for Neville with 14. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Lady Tigers storm back for the win over Lady Wildcats The Neville girls started district play on the right foot with a 39-35 comeback win over Wossman on Tuesday night at the George “Vamp” Belton Sports Complex. Beginning in the final seconds of the third quarter, the Lady Tigers (2-12) took the lead with a 12-0 run and held on to start 1-0 in District 2-4A. “I’m ecstatic for our team,” Neville girl’s coach Lori Guimbellot said. “These girls have been fighting all year to find themselves, and to get a win on the road as young as we are will do nothing but help us believe that if we work hard, good things will happen.” Trailing 29-25, Neville tied the game on a layup from Charney Brown and went ahead on an Ashley Sanders jumper. Kiera Horne’s three gave the Lady Tigers some breathing room, but the Lady Wildcats scored four straight points to make the deficit just a single point. Two free throws from Horne and Brown on a pair of trips to the line got Neville back up three. Wossman had one last to regain the lead following a Neville turnover on an inbounds play, but the Lady ‘Cats would turn the ball over themselves. A Sanders free throw in the closing seconds ensured the Lady Tigers win. Horne led Neville in scoring with 15 and Chameioya Davis posted 10 for Wossman.
