New Domain Names Released There are approximately 322 generic top-level domain names (gTLDs), including .net, and 300 or so country codes. That number is set to expand this year. Back in 2011, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Numbers and Names (ICANN) approved the plan to implement this expansion as one of the biggest internet changes. The intent was to allow worldwide businesses and organizations to apply for their own domain name extension. Available domain names The first top-level domains have already been released, and for the first time, some of them are in non-Latin languages. Some of the domains launched last year include the Arabic word for web, the Russian words for online and website and the Chinese word for game. Other new domain name endings include geographical suffixes, generic words, financial terms as well as exclusive domain name extensions for brands. The .london domain name was also announced last year for businesses and individuals based in the U.K. capital. The first of what will eventually be hundreds of new gTLDs on the internet this year began rolling out for public purchase at the end of January, including .clothing, .guru, .plumbing and .ventures. This is part of a multi-year effort led by ICANN to dramatically increase the number of available domains. Relevant web addresses This is good news for many businesses which might have missed out on the more desirable online names, such as joeplumber. If one is looking for a similar name, one would have to settle for a less demanded domain, such as joeplumber.biz. Now, online names, such as joe.plumbing expands the possibilities for many businesses as they enjoy more compelling, memorable and relevant web addresses. In addition, users will be able to find the websites more easily as they look for specific content based on each extension. Digital asset At the onset of the program, there were many legal concerns raised. However, many big companies are beginning to look at domains as digital assets and a route to drive forward their online strategy. For instance, one luxury goods company planned to use its .brand name to communicate the authenticity of its site. The new domains are being used in both an innovative and defensive way. Register your domain No matter the size of your business, you can also take advantage of these new changes and your business under the spotlight by registering a domain extension that expressly describes your business type or location.
