New England Wildlife Center is participating in a cool piece of research with the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study. The research is examining the risk of wildlife rehabilitators being infected by Baylisascaris procyonis, a raccoon roundworm parasite that is potentially very dangerous. It has caused severe symptoms in humans in a few rare medically documented cases over the years, but its possible that B. procyonis infects people more often than we realize and is just mostly asymptomatic. Our veterinary staffs blood will be examined for B. procyonis antibodies, which if present would show that our immune systems have reacted to the parasite in the past, and therefore that we have been exposed with no symptomatic effects. This study should give us useful knowledge about a risky part of what we do. If youre interested in reading more about the parasite, you can check out this link to our website for more information: wildlife-education-center/2014/12/baylisascaris-procyonis/
