New Haven crews battle fire at Delaneys Taproom - WFSB 3 Connecticut >Share on facebookShare on twitterShare on emailMore Sharing Services13 New Haven crews battle fire at Delaneys Taproom Posted: Aug 25, 2014 7:32 PM EDTUpdated: Aug 25, 2014 11:00 pm NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -New Haven fire crews are battling a blaze that broke out in the basement of Delaneys Taproom on Monday evening.The area of Whalley Avenue and Fountain Street, where the restaurant is located, is closed off to traffic.Fire officials said there were live wires reportedly in the street, which caused firefighters to step back for a bit.The fire was reported as a third alarm as of 7:30 p.m., and about 45 firefighters were still battling the blaze three hours later.Fire crews said the fire still wasnt extinguished at about 11 p.m., and are expected to let the building burn, and will tear it down by Tuesday.There were 15-foot flames shooting out of the roof at one point, and the fire reportedly started in the basement and made its way up.Rami Alnazzai said he has lived in the building for two years, and that he is devastated.All of my stuff is inside, money, clothes, everything. I have nothing, he said.The American Red Cross is helping five families who lost everything in the fire.Its part of history that just went up in smoke, said Steve Schreck of Hamden.Delaneys Taproom is a popular establishment located in the Westville section of New Haven, in a building that is more than 100 years old.Its really, really sad, this is where everyone comes. When people ask you where you live and you say Westville and they ask where that is and you say Delaneys, they know where you live, said Anastasia Okoniewski of New Haven.Police are asking the public to avoid the area of Whalley Avenue and Fountain Street, where there are reported power outages.There were reports of a partial collapse to one of the floors, and two firefighters were reportedly injured. One was admitted at the hospital, and another was being evaluated after complaining about chest pains.Anyone who uses Whalley Avenue or Fountain Street from Route 15 should find another route, since the area will be blocked off for a while
