New Management Plan for Babcock Preserve Written by Adam H. Putnam A measure passed by the Legislature this year became law July 1, streamlining the management of the Babcock Ranch Preserve and paving the way for its long-term stewardship and expanded public recreational opportunities. When the Babcock Ranch Preserve was created in 2006, it was the first public-private partnership of its kind in Florida. I’ve long considered Babcock Ranch Preserve to be a source of pride. It represents our desire as Floridians to conserve the land that God gave us for our children and grandchildren to enjoy. Moreover, it generates enough revenue to support itself, while connecting visitors to the land and its bounty. With the changes in management made by the Legislature this year, the Florida Forest Service will continue the stewardship of this natural gem with multiple management objectives – a working ranch that generates revenue and supports jobs, natural resource management that supports wildlife habitat and recharges the aquifer, and conservation of an environmental treasure just minutes from the hectic pace of urban lives. I know the communities surrounding the Babcock Ranch Preserve were integral in making this unique partnership possible, and I look forward to continuing to work with these important partners. The legislation passed this year creates an advisory group, consisting of natural resource and business experts, including two members selected by Lee and Charlotte counties, to ensure the communities around the preserve remain involved in its future. Together, we can make certain that the majesty and beauty of the Babcock Ranch Preserve will be available for future generations Adam H. Putnam is Florida commissioner of agriculture.
