New Moon and Solar Eclipse 23 October 2014 When I was looking at the charts for this New Moon and Solar Eclipse I was taken back to the summer and Glastonbury, to a workshop on Pluto with Judy Hall. This is her workshop description; “Pluto is perhaps the most enigmatic of all the astrological planets. A god who wore a helmet of invisibility when above the ground, he is all that is deepest and darkest in the psyche and the inner alchemical processes that power our transformation. Despite his bad press, it is in Pluto’s realm that our true riches are to be found. This is where we take responsibility for ourselves and all that we are capable of. Going where others fear to tread, we will need hard hats, a miner’s lamp and a pick and shovel to make this journey. But it will be rewarding and turn some of our deepest assumptions on their head along the way.... Unless you are ready to step outside your comfort zone and engage in deep transmutation this is not the workshop for you.” What is the connection? Pluto rules Scorpio, where Venus, the Moon and the Sun are tightly huddled together in these charts, having just entered the sign. A lot of people feel a tension building before a New Moon, known as the dark of the Moon and this could be a difficult one for those sensitive to the Moon phases or who have planets in their natal chart being affected. The energy could take us into a moody, mulling over of the past, brooding over past hurts and grudges. The Scorpio Sun on its own could be described as intense without 2 of his buddies joining the party. The combination of these 3 planets creates an intense, emotional, powerful energy. So, are hard hats and miners lamps really necessary? Well, as said above, are we prepared to step out of our comfort zone? Are we prepared to look at ourselves, how we relate to others, at old emotions which are likely to be brought to the surface? This Scorpio energy can be described as a deep well, representing the emotions, the feelings. In Scorpio, emotions often run very deep and can be difficult to access. When they are felt, there can be an intensity to them that can be overwhelming and scary enough to make us avoid going there again. They may feel so deep, so painful that they are left deeply hidden and are often only experienced when forced to the surface by circumstances and events. One of the challenges with Scorpio energy is not to leave things to fester, hidden below the surface but to stare our demons in the face and deal with them as and when they come up and to find ways to be more in touch with our feelings. The eclipse energies could be one a catalyst to blow away our defences and bring things from the past to the surface. Power is a key word; as with all energies, we can choose to express it productively or destructively. We need to check our mindset, are we being rigid, obstinate, maybe afraid of revealing something, of really being seen under that spotlight or of what lurks in the deep shadows? Over thinking the problem is a danger, and we need to break free from that pattern without employing escapist techniques that stop us really looking at what is going on. It’s very easy to put a sticking plaster on our wounds, finding some sort of temporary crutch to sooth our hurts but the satisfaction is likely to be short lived and on a superficial level. We will definitely need courage and a desire to be rid of these energies if we are to look at them and find the way to transform them from being projected onto others, to being healed within ourselves. We are who we are today because of the past, but is this because of, or in spite of what has happened to us? Have we allowed the past to hold us back, to weigh us down like an anchor, deep below the surface? There is a comfort and safety from this, but an anchor is not meant to permanently weigh us down, keeping us stuck in the same place. The alchemical, transformative energy of Scorpio is ultimately healing, the Phoenix rising from the ashes, the birth and rebirth cycle and a New Moon is a time to start new projects, make new beginnings so it is the perfect time to be reborn into a newer, emotionally fitter version of ourselves. We can start by asking ourselves how we relate to other people, how we get on with people in general, where power struggles show up. What do I need to change or let go of in my relationships, what is important to me and how can I more readily and positively express my feelings to others? Am I stubbornly refusing to forgive and forget? Our intuitions will be strong and we will have a heightened awareness of what is going on for other people and can use this to better understand them. We can get to the bottom of things and can make great discoveries if we dive deep, but it is up to us how far, how deep we dive. Imagination is also heightened and insights could come through lucid dreaming, ah-ha moments and spiritual messages. Looking ahead we have a few more days of Mercury retrograde so should notice an improvement after the weekend in all aspects of communication and be able to start taking action again after the thinking and reviewing of the last few weeks and difficulties arisen then should resolve. On 26th, Mars changes signs, entering Capricorn; this will help with anything we want to take forward and long term planning. Meanwhile, hard hats and lamps at the ready, and don’t forget the canary and the sandwiches. See you on the other side where we can admire each others new plumage!
