New Movies In Theaters Opening This Week - January 17 Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014) Certificate PG-13 105 min - Action | Drama | Thriller Jack Ryan, as a young covert CIA analyst, uncovers a Russian plot to crash the U.S. economy with a terrorist attack. Director: Kenneth Branagh Stars: Chris Pine, Kevin Costner, Keira Knightley, Kenneth Branagh THE BUZZ: Madea taking over as Alex Cross didnt really pan out, but when you position the new Captain Kirk as the new Jack Ryan, suddenly most everyone feels that the Tom Clancy character is in appealing hands -- especially knowing that Kenneth Branagh, who successfully wove together several genres in Thor, is behind the camera here. We think the studio most likely is expecting modest returns, but if opening weekend is a big surprise at the box office, you could be looking at a sequel/potential new franchise. Ride Along (2014) Certificate PG-13 100 min - Action | Comedy Fast-talking security guard Ben joins his cop brother-in-law James on a 24-hour patrol of Atlanta in order to prove himself worthy of marrying Angela, James sister. Director: Tim Story Stars: Ice Cube, Kevin Hart, Tika Sumpter, John Leguizamo THE BUZZ: Tim Story will probably never make another superhero film, but hes a crowd-pleasing comedy director with the cant-miss pairing of Ice Cube and Kevin Hart - the latter of whom has two handfuls of movie projects in the works (weve all forgotten about Grudge Match already). In fact, we bet Ice Cube could get his much-desired fourth Friday project off the ground with Hart attached. Devils Due (2014) Certificate R 89 min - Horror After a mysterious, lost night on their honeymoon, a newlywed couple finds themselves dealing with an earlier-than-planned pregnancy. While recording everything for posterity, the husband begins to notice odd behavior in his wife that they initially write off to nerves, but, as the months pass, it becomes evident that the dark changes to her body and mind have a much more sinister origin. Directors: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin | Tyler Gillett Stars: Allison Miller, Zach Gilford, Sam Anderson, Roger Payano THE BUZZ: The found-footage horror genre flicks its forked tongue at Rosemarys Baby with this apparent tribute. (In equally distressing news: did you hear that Rosemary is being remade for television? Not even cable!) Although this promotional stunt is one of the best weve ever seen. The Nut Job (2014) Certificate PG 86 min - Animation | Adventure | Comedy | Family Metascore: 31/100 (4 reviews) Surly, a curmudgeon, independent squirrel is banished from his park and forced to survive in the city. Lucky for him, he stumbles on the one thing that may be able to save his life, and the rest of park community, as they gear up for winter - Maurys Nut Store. Director: Peter Lepeniotis Stars: Will Arnett, Brendan Fraser, Liam Neeson, Katherine Heigl THE BUZZ: Its cool that a lot of experienced animators are getting directing jobs now that every major studio is trying its hand at the genre. Though its a little embarrassing when you have to handle a character and storyline that reeks of Scrat. Like Father, Like Son (2013) - [Limited] Certificate Not Rated 121 min - Drama Metascore: 71/100 (13 reviews) Ryota Nonomiya is a successful businessman driven by money. When he learns that his biological son was switched with another child after birth, he must make a life-changing decision and choose his true son or the boy he raised as his own. Director: Hirokazu Koreeda Stars: Masaharu Fukuyama, Machiko Ono, Yôko Maki, Rirî Furankî THE BUZZ: Usually, when it comes to family dynamics and the work of director Hirokazu Koreeda, he writes from the point of view of a child; his latest project focuses on a fathers perspective and introduces U.S. audiences to actor Masaharu Fukuyama. Both the director and his star have won accolades for their work (hello, Cannes Jury Prize), and an English-language remake is in development at DreamWorks. G.B.F. (2013) - [Limited] Certificate R 92 min - Comedy Metascore: 64/100 (4 reviews) What happens after Tanner is outed by his classmates and becomes the title gay best friend for three high school queen bees? Director: Darren Stein Stars: Michael J. Willett, Paul Iacono, Sasha Pieterse, Andrea Bowen THE BUZZ: Every few years we get a welcome addition to the high-school comedy genre; the latest and indiest comes from Jawbreaker director Darren Stein, which made a name for itself on the festival circuit before drumming up some additional attention due to its R rating from the MPAA. Big Bad Wolves (2013) - [Limited] 110 min - Comedy | Crime | Thriller Metascore: 68/100 (13 reviews) A series of brutal murders puts the lives of three men on a collision course: The father of the latest victim now out for revenge, a vigilante police detective operating outside the boundaries of law, and the main suspect in the killings - a religious studies teacher arrested and released due to a police blunder. Directors: Aharon Keshales | Navot Papushado Stars: Lior Ashkenazi, Rotem Keinan, Tzahi Grad, Dovale Glickman THE BUZZ: Quentin Tarantino slotted Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushados torture-happy thriller on his top 10 list for 2013, so we know plenty of people will tune in to watch seemingly heroic men succumb to brutality on a seemingly hopeless search for a child serial killer. We could almost see this turned into an event series in the U.S. Summer in February (2013) - [Limited] Certificate Not Rated 100 min - Biography | Drama | Romance A true tale of love, liberty and scandal amongst the Edwardian artists colony in Cornwall Director: Christopher Menaul Stars: Dominic Cooper, Emily Browning, Dan Stevens, Hattie Morahan THE BUZZ: Having watched the current season of Downton Abbey we can see why Dan Stephens, who played Matthew Crawley on the program, chose to exit the series while it was still compulsory viewing. The actor who played the man who helped thaw out Lady Marys heart has booked a series of relatively high profile supporting roles, and here he completes an intriguing love triangle as he entangles himself with Emily Browning and Dominic Cooper for seasoned TV director Christopher Menaul.
