New Years Dog Owner Goals: 1). I will do my best to be as consistent with training as I can! 2). I understand (and will work on) the need for my dog to Sit Stay far enough away from the door and not move until I tell him/her it is safe to move. This will help keep my dog from running in the street, jumping on guests who are not thrilled with a dog jumping on them! It will also teach my dog better self control which is a big praise worthy action! 3). I understand the need (and will work on) for my dog to learn to lie down and get comfortable and also be able to hold it for up to one hour. This will allow myself, my family and friends to eat dinner without my dog begging or having to be put away. This will also be the most wonderful command to have my dog do when we have to wait for a vet a vet appointment. This will help to prevent unnecessary stress upon the dog! How wonderful to teach my dog to relax upon command for an hour! 3). I understand (and will work on) my dog not pulling on a leash or making excuses for such behavior. I will continue to work on teaching my dog to Heel, or walk beside me without pulling, no matter the distraction, as well as to automatically Sit whenever I stop walking. 4). I understand ( and will work on) my dog not becoming a nuisance to myself or my neighbors, through excessive barking. I will not fight with my neighbors as to what is considered nuisance barking. My dog could bark to let me know someone has arrived, but the minute I say Quiet, the dog must immediately Quiet. My dog could also bark to let me know something is amiss. But I must be respectful and not make excuses. 5). I understand (and will work on) the need for my dog to Come ASAP the moment I call him/her. I will not make excuses for the dog not doing so, as I know any delay could be detrimental to my dogs safety. I will do whatever it takes to ensure that my dog is trained to this level. 6). I understand the need (and will work on) for my dog to immediately Leave It if requested. If my dog swallows something dangerous instead of spitting it out, it could make my dog very ill. 7). I understand (and will work on) the need to be more educated about my dogs breed(s). I do understand that this may help me greatly in the training, medical as well as behavioral side of my dog. 8). I understand (and will work on) the difference between actual research and reading on the web. I will continue to be inquisitive and wanting to learn more. That said, I will consult with my veterinarian, who I trust implicitly, on any medical or nutritional questions, rather than relying upon the web. 9). I understand, (and will work on) the proper grooming requirements for my dog. If money is tight, I will make myself available to do the work required in between grooming appointments, so that grooming does not become a stressful event for my dog, but rather, a relaxing event! 10). I understand, (and will work on) presenting my dog in the most honest light I can, improving upon my dogs weak points, and encouraging more of my dogs strong points! Happy New Year!
