New York City’s ambitious Energy Code surpasses national standards, and now under the leadership of Mayor de Blasio we have a plan to integrate these efficiencies into existing structures by retrofitting our public buildings, and working with private owners to incorporate these standards. To advance this initiative, the Department of Buildings will work closely with stakeholders in the construction industry to support and educate builders during plan examinations on sustainable building practices that are provided in the NYC Energy Code. The bold and achievable goal of an 80 percent reduction in emissions by 2050 isn’t only necessary for upholding our citys future in combating climate change, but will also provide substantial energy cost savings for New Yorkers. - Commissioner Rick Chandler
