The largest city in the US by population, the culture of New York City reflects its importance in size and variety. Many American cultural phenomena got their start here. The African-American literary movement known as the Harlem Renaissance emerged in the early 20th century. New York was the hot spot for jazz in the 1940s and the expressionist art movement, also called The New York School, in the 1950s. The Broadway musical was born in New York. New York is widely considered the fashion capital of the United States. Since the early 20th century, the Manhattan neighborhood known as The Fashion District has been Americas headquarters for fashion design. Most of the citys major fashion labels are based here and no other US city has such a concentration of fashion businesses. Nicknames for New York - Where Did They Come From? The City that Never Sleeps This stems from a line from the Liza Minnelli song New York, New York: I want to wake up in a city that never sleeps. It was once said that if you stand at Times Square long enough, youll see the entire world walk by. The Empire State Adopted around the beginning of the 19th Century, it is commonly believed to refer to the states wealth and resources, but its true origin is unclear. One version credits George Washington, citing a letter in which he called New York the Seat of the Empire. The City So Nice They Named it Twice This comes from a song written in 1978 by Gerard Kenny. The song is actually titled New York, New York (So Good They Named it Twice). Gotham City The term is tied to 19th-century author Washington Irving. He nicknamed the city in 1807. It was not meant to be flattering, as the name refers to a village of simple-minded fools. Nowadays most associate the name with the noir setting for the Batman comic. The Big Apple One version states that sports reporter John Fitzgerald heard it used by horse racing insiders in New Orleans and was the first to use it in print in 1920.
