New York Times, Twitter hacked by Syrian group Two weeks after a server problem caused The New York Times’ website to crash, the newspaper’s website was again off line on Tuesday and hackers associated with a pro- Syrian government group were suspected. The New York Times website was inaccessible for some users starting around 3 pm (1900 GMT). The site was still affected six hours later. “Our initial assessment is that this is most likely the result of a malicious external attack,” the Times said in a statement on Facebook. Eileen Murphy, a spokeswoman for the newspaper, said on Twitter that the website was experiencing technical difficulties. She was quoted by the Washington Post as saying the outage was likely due to a “malicious external attack.” It continued publishing at its Twitter and Facebook accounts. A Twitter account for the Syrian Electronic Army claimed it was responsible and said it was the source of a similar attack on Huffington Post UK and Twitter. Twitter is looking into the report, company spokesman Jim Prosser confirmed to the Washington Post. The Syrian Electronic Army has accused Western media of false reporting about the civil war in Syria. Typically when the hackers take control of a website, they use the opportunity to disseminate messages supporting the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. #source Washington Post
