New York USA 1.20.2014 ( MANILA ) WORLD NEWS: FILIPINO FACEBOOK SUPPORTERS OF DETAINED WITHOUT TRIAL IN SIGHT FORMER PHILIPPINE PRESIDENT HELD PRAYER VIGIL AND CANDLE LIGHTING, URGED COURT TO GRANT BAIL TO SICK GLORIA ARROYO Facebook supporters of former President now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo held a prayer vigil and candle-lighting Friday night outside the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) to call on the Sandiganbayan to grant her bail in her plunder case. Ton Davila said some 50 supporters of her Facebook page, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, decided to go to the VMMC to express their support to the former President and call on the Sandiganbayan to grant her bail so she can be with her family to ensure her immediate recovery from her illness. We pity President Gloria and we believe she did not commit any crime that is why we are appealing to the justices of the Sandiganbayan to grant her bail, especially at this time when she needs her family because of her illness, Davila said. Davila added friends of the Gloria Macapagal Arroyo Facebook page had agreed to hold the prayer vigil and candle-lighting outside the VMMC where the former President is under detention Friday night so their voice could be heard in the growing support she has been receiving the past few months. We agreed last week to come here and hold a prayer vigil. We chose Friday because it is the day when many of us could make it here, Davila explained. Political leaders and celebrities, including former Presidents Fidel Ramos and Joseph Estrada, former Vice President Noli de Castro, retired Archbishop Oscar Cruz, Brother Eddie Villanueva and the family of the late Vice President Doy Laurel, have been seen visiting the former president at the VMMC and expressing their sympathy and support. The former President has been under hospital arrest after suffering from complications brought about by her condition called cervical spondylosis. Davila pointed out many of the participants came from the provinces, as far as Mindoro Oriental, Quezon, Batangas, Laguna, Cavite and Bulacan, just to attend the vigil which started at 6 p.m. and ended at 9 p.m. The former President did not know we were going here. It is our way of expressing our support to her, he said. It is clear no evidence was presented against her and her co-accused had been set free but she is still in detention. She is ill and already old. Her petition should be granted because that is what is right under the law and her right as a human being, he stressed. Sharon Umali, another supporter, said she left their house in Mindoro Oriental early morning Friday so she can make it to the 6 p.m. vigil. But I was still late because of ship engine trouble. But I am still happy because I came here and showed my support, she said. Umali added she was staying in a friends house in Cavite for the night and will return home Saturday morning. Davila said many other supporters of the Pampanga representative in her Facebook page, which has more than 5,000 followers, wanted to attend the vigil but could not make it because of time and financial constraints. But there many of us. Much more are not on Facebook and we are ready to show our support to the former President. This is just the beginning, he said.
