New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) We have 3 official languages - TopicsExpress

New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) We have 3 official languages in NZ: English, Maori and NZSL. On 10th April 2006 the Deaf community finally won their battle. Legislation for the NZSL Act was signed by Government officials and those at the heart of NZ’s Deaf community. If you’d like to know more about this, check - odi.govt.nz/what-we-do/nzsl/nzsl-history.html. Prior to recognition and accomplishment, of this basic human need to communicate, Deaf people here in NZ, like those around the world, suffered from poor education and oppression (stories to be shared later). This young language is still being strengthened and access is a key thing, but you’ll be able to help with that :)
