{New and surprising #3 Issue @ BE} Nicky Morgan has said she is now in favour of gay marriage, having previously voted against it in the Commons. Speaking on the Today programme, the Equalities Minister said she would take a different stance if the vote was held again. The U-turn follows her controversial appointment to the brief in July, despite widely-voiced opposition to equal marriage rights. I had a lot of constituents who asked me to vote in a particular way and I listened to them and it was an issue of conscience too, but I have certainly learnt an awful lot doing this job,” she said this morning. “I think I probably would [vote in favour of gay marriage]. But at the end of the day, as a Member of Parliament, I’m also here to represent my constituents...I wish that people had come forward earlier to say ‘actually, we’d like you to support it’. I suppose for some people it was...obvious but actually I think it was something that we needed to discuss and to debate. Commenting earlier on todays announcement of the launch of a £2m fund aimed at tackling homophobic bullying schools, Ms Morgan said: “Any young person who is different can find themselves subjected to distressing and intimidating homophobic abuse. This funding will help schools take on the challenge of making sure bullies do not stand in the way of our young people achieving their full potential.” It comes as a report by the Children’s Commission on Poverty warns that many families are struggling to meet the costs of sending children to state school, with dinners, uniforms, course materials and trips reportedly forcing parents into debt.
