New community center, library opens in Southside MARC GOLDEN | GADSDEN TIMES Guests tour the library Sunday during an open house at the new Southside Community Center and Library. The building features a large room, kitchen, small meeting room and the library. Jun 30, 2013 By John Davidson / Times Staff Writer The city of Southside on Sunday unveiled its new community center, which will provide twice as much space for community activities and for the city’s library. It is located in what once was the cafeteria of the old Southside High School, and is roughly twice the size of the old community center. The repurposing of the cafeteria began in January. Workers gutted the building and created two meeting rooms, one large and one small, and a space for the library. The work was done by city employees for the most part — the exceptions being heating, air conditioning, plumbing and other specialized work — and the total cost was about $200,000. The library will have twice as much space as before and will include more computers and more space for books. The two meeting rooms will enable two functions to be scheduled simultaneously, something that wasn’t possible in the old building. The facility also features a new kitchen and new restrooms, which will allow it to be used for banquets and wedding receptions and by local businesses for meetings. Local, state and national elections also will be held there. Mayor Wally Burns said the renovation has been so thorough, some residents have asked him if it is an entirely new building. “I think it’s going to be an asset to the city,” Burns said. “It turned out really good.”
