New conversation started at LinkedIn for Sports Performance and Physical Therapy Group: Posture, Pain, Movement, and the Therapeutic Process Robert Carroll Team Director/Developer at SPARK Womens Racing p/b Pedal, Manual Therapy for Sports Performance and Injury Rehab Dear Group Members, I would like to start a new discussion that may impact my and your understanding of posture, pain, and rehabilitation of injury/chronic pain scenarios. I will begin the conversation with a common postural scenario of anterior/internal rotation of the shoulders causing anterior thoracic kyphosis, posterior thoracic old lady hump, as I like to affectionately refer to the condition of thoracic hump...especially seen by cyclists and desk jockeys. The indicated muscular structures are many in the opposing forces that contribute to the result in these conditions, as well as, gravity, neuromuscular function (resolution of acute and chronic pain, as well as, muscle activation or re-patterning is an outcome often sought in therapy), mechanical joint function (improvement of ROM is often a sought after result of therapy), as well as, life stressors and nutritional/dietary needs of an individual. The BIG QUESTION: When dealing with issues of chronic pain in the area of C7-T5 posterior thoracic region; Do you focus on postural symptoms as causation, static adherence to postural correction as the resolution of chronic painful syndromes (ie: Trigger Point activity), stretching and exercise programs, or movement through the planes of biomechanics? As well, does posture contribute to chronic pain issues exhibited by many of the clients/patients we serve in our clinical settings?
