New estimates suggest that more than 3m British households now subscribe to Netflix – twice as many as a year ago. The figures place the streaming service well ahead of its nearest direct rival, Amazon, with younger viewers particularly drawn to Netflix. Netflix does not disclose its progress in the UK, but research by Enders Analysis based on a survey by Barb indicates that an extra 1.5m households have joined in the past year. In the previous 12 months only an estimated 500,000 signed up. The boost is attributed to content exclusive to Netflix in the UK, such as Breaking Bad and the remake of House of Cards, and a wholesale deal with Virgin Media. The service will be made available on YouView boxes supplied by BT and TalkTalk later this year, and BSkyB could follow suit. Amazon’s streaming service is estimated to have been taken up by just 1.2m households.
