New homeowners beware, yet another scam to watch out for.. My wife and I received these letters last year when we bought our house telling us that we needed a copy of our deed and that they would graciously help us obtain a copy of a mere $60.00. Of course having ordered documents from the Register of Deeds before I wondered why they were charging such an exorbitant amount when it is a $1.00 per page and deeds tend to be 1-2 pages. As an attorney, I cannot think of any reason why you would need your deed other than for litigation or refinancing. What I especially like from these companies is that it takes up to 21 days to get the deed, really? I can get it in 5 minutes on this thing called the internet. You can see the sample letters here mlive/news/kalamazoo/index.ssf/2013/07/kalamazoo_county_clerk_warns_p.html?utm_source=WhatCounts+Publicaster+Edition&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=MiLW+Daily+Alert%3a+No+movement+on+no-fault+bill%2c+to+be+taken+up+after+recess&utm_content=Kalamazoo+clerk+says+property+owners+should+get+deeds+from+county+#incart_river_default
