Newer IITs yet to fill their quota of seats this year An engineering seat at an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is a coveted one in India but despite the reputation, newer IITs are finding it tough to fill the seats. It has been reported that IIT-Bhubaneswar (IIT-BBS) has not been able to fill up its seats. Sharing its fate with most engineering colleges in the state, 17 BTech seats in the institution will remain vacant this year, as there was no taker against these seats till the end of admission process on Saturday. It was reported that a total 163 students took admission against the sanctioned strength of 180 in BTech. As many as 36 students enrolled in civil, 40 in computer sciences, 39 in electrical and 36 in mechanical engineering courses against an intake capacity of 40 each. In metallurgy, only 12 students took admission, which has seat strength of 20, leaving eight seats vacant. It was mentioned that around dozen of the vacant 17 seats were for reserved category students (STs/SCs) for which qualified students were not available. For the rest, the selected aspirants did not turn up. Last year, 15 seats had fallen vacant. According to reports, the institute has admitted two students in preparatory classes. From among the SC/ST students who fail to touch the minimum qualifying marks in JEE Advanced for admission, the IITs admit some students proportionate to vacancies on basis of their merit below the cut-off into such Class XII-level classes. If they qualify an examination conducted by the institute, they will be allowed to take admission against the vacant reserved seats for their category next year. If they fail, they will forfeit such claims. It can be recalled that earlier it was reported that out of the total 9,711 students, 9,061 accepted the admission this year during the first round. However, 650 students did not accept the seats although they got the opportunity to do the same. This year, seats under the general category in the IITs are still vacant after the end of the first round.
