#News: #Ethiopia: 30 Million People benefit from Sustainable Land Management Program The Ministry of Agriculture says over 30 million people have benefited from the Sustainable Land Management Program which has been operating in the Regional States of Oromia, Tigray, Amhara and Gambella as well as in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples and in Benishangul Gumuz. A documentary entitled Greening Ethiopias Highlands: A New Hope for Africa launched on Wednesday (October 1) portrays the impressive work done at grassroots level to improve productivity and ensure self sufficiency. Professor Tekalign Mamo, Advisor to the Minister of Agriculture, said the program encompassed four components, irrigation, rain-fed agriculture, land rehabilitation and the use of fertilizer, to preserve the environment. It had yielded impressive results even in rain-fed agricultural areas. The World Bank Country Director for Ethiopia, Guang Chen, said the Sustainable Land Management Program, which started in 2007, had played a key role in transforming degraded landscape in rural areas. The program, supported by the World Bank, along with the government of Norway and the Global Environment Facility, had expanded the program from 45 to 135 watersheds in the second phase. Havard Hoksnes, Head of Development Cooperation at the Norwegian Embassy, said the results registered had been remarkable; and the World Bank Senior Director of Environment and Natural Resources, Paula Caballero, said the program was playing a major role in changing the future of the country for the better.mfa.gov.et/news/more.php?newsid=3540
