News Friday May 16th Emergency exercise next week A Major Emergency Services Exercise organised by the Western Isles Emergency Planning Coordinating Group (WIEPCG) is taking place in the Creed Business park next week. The exercise next Tuesday will involve Responder Agencies and will test multi-agency response. From 7pm on Tuesday for two hours responder vehicles will be moving between the Lochside Arena and the Creed Park Service road and the planning group apologises for any inconvenience this may cause. The public is asked for patience and cooperation during the exercise. Undiagnosed diabetes cases ‘staggering’ Highlands and Islands MSP David Stewart says figures from the Scottish Government which reveal the true extent of undiagnosed Diabetes cases in the Western Isles are ‘staggering’. Mr Stewart, who was appointed the Scottish Parliamentary Champion for Diabetes last year says that 1,259 people in the Western Isles have been diagnosed with Diabetes, but a further 698 people remain undiagnosed and therefore at significant risk of developing heath issues. Mr Stewart said: “I have been calling on the Scottish Government to take steps towards finding the undiagnosed through high risk screening for type 2 diabetes. We know who the at risk groups are and therefore who the Scottish Government need to target. It’s obvious that we should be screening those at risk before it ends in emergency. Diabetes remains the main cause of blindness in people of working age and the main contributor to kidney failure, amputations and cardiovascular disease.” Hikers nearly there! Charity hikers John Maciver and Kevin Smith are on the last 32 miles of their Hebridean Memory Hike today, hoping to reach Ness tonight. The pair have faced some challenging conditions with sharp winds, but have also been inspired by the supporrt of many people along the way. Before setting off today from Carloway, they said: “Thank you again to everyone who came and supported us by walking with us and to the many who donated. We are now preparing ourselves mentally for the last section to the Butt of Lewis.” Support team member Kenny Maclennan will be live on Isles FM this afternoon at 4pm to give an update.
