#News: Ministry of Foreign Affairs organizes work-shop on Recognition and Enforcement of Arbitral Awards The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA) organized a two day work-shop this week (September 23-24) for Members of the House of Peoples’ Representatives, and of the House of Federation, Judges and other stakeholders from different federal offices on the New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Arbitral Awards. Chief Advisor to the Minister, Ambassador Fisseha Yimer, opening the workshop, said that Ethiopia was currently considering the ratification of the New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Arbitral Awards. He noted that Ethiopia believed that availability of dispute settlement mechanisms were at the heart of the international trading system. Without this, no fruitful and viable commercial relations could be established. Ambassador Fisseha pointed out that Ethiopia also recognized the place and benefit of arbitration as an out-of court dispute settlement mechanism. He emphasized that any economic progress registered in Ethiopia needed an effective dispute settlement procedure to ensure its continuity. During the workshop, different stakeholders gave presentations and explanations on international arbitral institutions, arbitral proceedings, the role of national courts, investment arbitration, the status and future of international arbitration in Ethiopia and a general overview of the New York Convention. mfa.gov.et/news/more.php?newsid=3512
