News Mix. _Diebetes ages the mind, can trigger dementia early._ London. _ Diebetes ages the mind by five years, potentially hastening the on set of demnetia in later life. Researchers in the US have found that people who develope diebetes in mid life are more likely to show signs of cognative decline 20 years later. The research led by team of Johns Hapkins University looked at dats from 20 years Athero Sclerosis Risk in community study. They included data on 13,351 people who were aged between 48/67 in 1990 when each participant took part in series of cognitive tests to asses their thinking and memory. These tests were repeated after six years and again after 20 years after the first test were carried out. When the study began, the participants were also asked if they had been diagnosed with diebetes and thir blood sugar levels were checked for signs of condition. The researchers found that those who had diebetes in midlife tended to have worse cognitive scores after 20 years than people without the condition. Further analysis showd that diebetes people with the highest blood sugar level had the greatest decline in thinking and memory over 20 years. Laura Phipps of Alzheimerd Research UK said. This study adds to evidence linking diebetes to thinking and memory problems in later life, and suggests that controlling blood sugar levels in mid life may also help keep our brain healthy. Although this study did not look at dementia under stading how to keep our brains healthy. as we grow older could provide vital insight to help efforts to prevent the condition.
