#News: NEBE : About 33 mln expected to register to vote for upcoming general elections Demisew Benti, Public Relations Director of the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), announced today (December 30) that around 33 million people are expected to register to vote for the upcoming general elections. The Public Relations Director of the Board said that the aforementioned number of voters is expected to register in the course of the voters’ registration time which is set to be held from (January 9--February 19), adding that all the preliminary activities and necessary steps have already been made for the registration in terms of distribution of registration records as well as other related election materials. He further noted that polling stations will officially recommence duties starting from January 8 next year, detailing that the Board laying the foundational work and carrying out the necessary activities, including offering awareness creation trainings to youth, women, teachers, heads of civic society, journalists and other stakeholders with a view to make to ensure the election is held in fair, democratic mnner. Demisew Benti referred that a recently issued report conducted by International Democratic Election Agent (IDEA), more than 29 million out of the 31 million people registered in the 2010 Ethiopia’s general had cast their votes, noting that the report mirrored that 93.4 per cent of the voters had casted their ballot, displaying that a high turnout compared to Africa’s average turnout at 67.3 per cent.
