#News : South Sudan peace talks to resume IGAD has announced that the Fourth Session of the IGAD-led South Sudan Peace Process in Addis Ababa, adjourned on June 23, will resume on July 30. In recent weeks the IGAD Special Envoys have carried out broad consultations with various actors and stakeholders in the South Sudan Peace Process. The main objective of the consultations has been to stock of the progress and challenges to the Peace Process and chart a way forward, particularly for implementation of the resolutions of the IGAD Assembly of Heads of State and Government Summit on June 10. The resolutions of the Summit included the commitment of the two principals, President Salva Kiir Mayardit, and Dr. Riek Machar, leader of the SPLM/A-In-Opposition),“to end the war” and to establish a Transitional Government of National Unity that will offer the best chance for the people of South Sudan to take the country forward. Stopping the conflict will create a conducive environment for negotiations, and facilitate humanitarian operations to reach the needy populations and pre-empt the looming famine in South Sudan. The Special Envoys carried out extensive consultations in Addis Ababa, Nairobi and in Juba, and met with the principals of the warring parties. They also held consultative meetings with delegations of stakeholders to the peace process including the Government of South Sudan, the SPLM/A-In-Opposition and the SPLM Leaders(Former Detainees), as well as representatives of political parties, civil society organizations and faith-based organizations. All the stakeholders reiterated their commitment to the process of negotiations, tentatively scheduled to commence on July 30 and last to Agusut 10. The agenda will cover finalization and signing of the Cessation of Hostilities Matrix and negotiations on details of a Transitional Government of National Unity.
