Daisy Olopai Towai Clifton commented how these slack key postings made her homesick and aroused in her a deep longing for the old days when my Uncles use to jam on my grandparents front porch. Im glad that this music from distant Hawaii arouses such feelings on Saipan. It reinforces my feeling that they may be Polynesians and we (giisch, if I may include myself for a moment) are Carolinian, but in the end, we all share common roots in the distant past and are all, after all, very literally ReFaluwasch Heres another session, which I might have posted before, that would also probably remind Daisy of her uncles jamming on the front porch or in the yard. It reminds me too of such sessions in CK. The guys in this yard, though, are some of the giants of Hawaiian music, performing (Waimanalo Blues) in a relaxed down-home style we too are familiar with: (from left: Roland Cazimero, Israel Iz Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole, Cyril Pahinui, and (lead singer) Henry Kapono). As Ive said before, this song is also very relevant to Saipan as we contemplate the future: Tired and worn, I woke up this morning // Found that I was confused // Spun right around and found I had lost // The things that I couldnt lose . . . . The beaches they sell to build their hotels // My fathers and I once knew // Birds all along sunlight at dawn // Singing Waimanalo blues.
