News: Speed, Shooting, Heart Seen As Keys To Gilas Success In FIBA Asia Championship In his heyday as a member of the 1973 Philippine team, Yoyong Martirez was known for his blazing speed. That team won the Asian Basketball Confederation Championship that was last hosted in Manila that year. The SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team will try to duplicate the feat when the country hosts the FIBA Asia Championship in August. Even though Gilas will suit up perhaps the tallest Philippine team in history, Martirez sees speed as a key to the Philippine game, just as it was during his time. Unlike in the past, however, he sees the guards in the national team equipped with a more complete game. “Magagaling rin ang shooting nila, katulad ni (Jimmy) Alapag. Talagang di mo puwedeng pakawalan yan,” Martirez told InterAKTV in an exclusive interview. “Magaling rin si (Jayson) Castro. Mabilis at may tira rin. Yun ang magandang bentahe ngayon ng mga guwardiya natin.
