News: The Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC) has continued its clamp-down on illegal universities in Nigeria with the closing of two “universities” in Lagos. A team of NUC officials, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) and the operators of the State Security Service (SSS) paid a visit to the Evangel University of America, Egan, Igando and Clinton University Study Centre, Ojokoro and sealed off the colleges as they were operating without licence. At the Evangel Christian University of America, a four-bedroom flat on 2, Akinola Street, Olufemi Estate, Egan, Igando, the enforcement team arrested Dr. Philip Nnaji, the school bursar, a middle-aged man. Nnaji however feigned ignorance saying he was not aware that the institution was operating illegally. He told the officials that to the best of his knowledge, the institution runs as an affiliate campus of the parent university sited in Illinois, United States of America(USA). He said the Nigerian campus only awards diploma, degrees and post graduate degrees in Theology. Some of the students who were already seated for classes looked on as they realized that they are being duped all along. With the number of admission seekers increasing every year and no significant improvement in the carrying capacity of tertiary institutions in Nigeria, it comes as no surprise that innocent candidates fall victim of these scammers.
