News:Tie up to benefit state with latest practices and technologies Slovakia to extend expertise and knowledge in agricultural activities in Meghalaya SHILLONG, November, 11: Slovak University of Agriculture has agreed in principle to work jointly with the State of Meghalaya on outsourcing the university expertise in the field of research and training. This evolved after an interaction between chief minster Dr Mukul Sangma and Professors of Slovak University of Agriculture, Nitra headed by Dr. Peter Bielik, the Rector. “There is an ardent need for our officers to better themselves and equip themselves likewise with the latest trends and practices in the field of agriculture and horticulture so that our farmers are given the opportunity for better capacity building,” Dr Sangma stated while adding “Agriculture and now horticulture are two sectors which are essential to the development of the state’s economy and hence the government stands committed to ensure that all necessary and adequate support is provided to our farmers.” The Rector of the University welcomed the suggestions of Dr Sangma to work jointly in identifying the areas of water resource management, agriculture and horticulture in relation to food safety norms for marketing and to work on the existing indigenous varieties of crops which can withstand the affect of climate change. The Meghalaya delegation was presented with an offer from the University for further insight into long term research and development in the field of integrated water management, advance systems in agriculture and horticulture farming, food processing and value chain creation in the agro-horticulture sector. The meeting culminated in modalities being worked out for forging a partnership between the University and the Government of Meghalaya to take advantage from the expertise and knowledge of the University in the relevant fields including sponsoring and training of young officers from agriculture, horticulture and water resources departments of the state. Further, during his stay the CM also met Jaroslav Jankovic, head of the National Forest Centre, Zvolen, Slovakia who presented the activities in information and communication technologies and modern web GIS solutions for which the centre had earned an award for using Forestry GIS from ESRI user conference in San Diego, California during July 2012. The centre further expressed its willingness to support Meghalaya in advanced information technologies using Forestry GIS in various sectors. Dr Sangma also met a number of business delegates of Bratislava, Slovakia who expressed their interest to explore the possibilities of joint ventures with Meghalaya in various sectors.
