News Tuesday August 12th Back to school – no uniform Parents of children due to start school this week are anxious and confused about arrangements for school dinners and uniforms, with conflicting information being given out to new parents. Schools go back this Friday for a half day only, as an inset day for teachers has added an extra day’s holiday on Thursday. Parents of new primary 1 children at Stornoway Primary have been told that uniforms are not ready for collection because of a delay by suppliers. The parent council hopes to have orders ready for the children before they start school on Friday. Meanwhile the Council Education department has told parents pre-paid diner cards will not be available for several weeks, meaning very young children are expected to take money in to their new school for school dinners. One parent said: “It’s an absolute joke and terrible service. It’s four days’ time and so far he has no school jumper and no dinner account set up. Parents are already anxious about sending the new starts in without all this disorganisation.” ‘Off-the peg’ skills at GSH Western Isles MP Angus Brendan MacNeil is offering to act as a job-matching service for employees of the GSH Group in Harris, all of whom have been laid off as the firm closes its Tarbert office. Mr MacNeil says he believes there is a great resource available in Harris, as the existing team are available to any company needing skilled staff for back-office functions. He said: “The centre in Harris has high-end skills in human resources, planning and compliance work for contracts. Indeed they can provide an off-the-peg option of a full back-office operation for any company looking to recruit in these areas and in a lower cost environment than usually found in large cities. I hope that the skills that have been built up in Harris will find a company or group in need of these services and make the perfect match.
