News from Mrs. Livengood (High Altitude Balloon Launch) Good news! We were able to successfully track and retrieve our high-altitude balloon and everything was still intact. We were able to track it live and found it in a farmers field just north and east of US 81 near Minneapolis, Kansas. Thankfully, it missed the Pike River by about a quarter mile and there were no bulls in the field! At first, we hiked a half mile in an alfalfa field to the river then realized it must have landed on the other side of the river so we hiked back to the vehicles, went over the nearby bridge and found it in the next field. After eating our South Middle smorgasbord today, I sure needed the exercise that I got looking for the balloon. We also tracked that the balloon went at least 80,548 feet into the atmosphere. The stratosphere extends from approximately 39,000 feet to 180,000 feet so we were well into the stratosphere again this year. Last year we got up to 92,142 feet so we didnt get quite as high today, but we were still pretty high up. Im not sure how many linear miles it traveled yet, but it went from the west side of Hays to the east side of US 81 near Minneapolis. We were so relieved that all the equipment including our cameras was still intact. We will be uploading data in the coming weeks to see if our hypothesis were correct. After we get our webpage updated, Ill let you all know where to find photos and data if youre interested. Thanks again to everyones support and prayers. They have been much appreciated.
