News from New Vision Congregational Church, for Nov. 17th Greetings one and all: Last week, Nov. 10th,guided by Anna and Casey, our children’s class learned what it meant to be a veteran and serve one’s country and they had fun together. They made 20 cards of thanks, decorated with different kinds and colors of stamps. They were sent to: Holiday Mail for Heroes. Sometimes, people wonder if things like this get to the intended recipients, so I checked it out. It does! Even Snopes says so, because of a partnership between the American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes Co. The cards sent this way are given to active duty, injured and veteran service people. They are taken out of the envelopes, so do not need to be individually addressed. So, think about adding this address to your holiday card list and sending a couple of cards, knowing it will brighten someone’ s holidays: Holiday Mail for Heroes, PO Box 5456, Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456. Deadline is Dec. 6th. Also last week was the second Sunday on the theme, “Where Your Heart Is.” This theme for November will continue for Nov. 17 and conclude with the Thanksgiving Service on Nov. 24th with a dedication of pledges for the 2014 ministry. Last week, pledge cards were given out. Please be sure to pick one up when you are at worship, if you did not receive one. Also coming up on Nov. 24, we will begin to receive the Neighbors in Need offering. This is a mission of the wider church in which we are committed to participate. Here is what the UCC website (which by the way is FULL of good info and resources) has to say about the purpose of the NIN offering: “Neighbors in Need (NIN) is a special mission offering of the UCC that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. One-third of NIN funds support the Council for American Indian Ministry(CAIM). Two-thirds of the offering is used by the UCCs Justice and Witness Ministries(JWM) to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects through grants. Neighbors in Need grants are awarded to churches and organizations doing justice work in their communities. These grants fund projects whose work ranges from direct service to community organizing and advocacy to address systemic injustice. Funding is provided through donations to the Neighbors in Need offering.” Find out more by going to: ucc.org/nin/. Disaster Response for the Philippines-you have been overwhelmed by the needs of those surviving Typhoon Haiyan, as have I. How to help? What is best to do for the struggling people of this poor island nation? One excellent reason to be part of a wider church ministry is that our contributions go farther and accomplish more than we could on our own. Read the link below to find out how the UCC is responding on your behalf and continue to pray for the people of the Philippines! ucc.org/news/typhoon-haiyan-aid-1132013.html And coming up… • E.
