Newsletter Of the Friends of the Great Yarmouth Cemeteries Issue No.11 January 2015 Saturday Working Parties: 7th February, 7th March, 4th April, 2015. Meet at 10 am at the far (north) chapel in the New Cemetery on the north side of Kitchener Rd. Friends usually work from ten to midday, though everybody is welcome even if they can only attend part of the time. A notice is left at the chapel door for latecomers to explain whereabouts the group is working. We now have a new trolley built by Ken which has made it so much easier to remove cuttings to the green waste dump. Activities undertaken over the last three months have been continuing to maintain P Plot in the Old Cemetery and clearing graves identified by Paul Davies as being of special interest. More bird boxes have also been installed. It has been agreed that if the weather is too poor to work in the cemeteries on the first Saturday of the month, it will be a standing procedure to schedule the following Saturday as a working party day. To check, please phone Ken on 01493 731908. Proposed Wednesday Working Party. Ken and Michael are also keen to start a Wednesday Working Party group as many members are not free on Saturdays. If anybody is interested, please phone Ken on 01493 731908. Litter Pick Day, Saturday 16th May. Meet in the Minster Porch at 10am. This will be advertised widely to encourage community support. Seed and Plant Swap, Saturday 18th April Community organisations are being approached to help or contribute with a seed and plant swap event, when people can bring in seeds or plants they don’t need and swap for ones they do. It will be held outside the Minster porch 10 – 12 am, or inside the Minster if the weather is bad. Recording graves in the churchyard, Wednesday 11th March Anybody willing to help with this task will be most welcome, it is a really interesting activity and not onerous. There are just two plots remaining to record after which a churchyard plan and database can be uploaded for public reference. Meet in the Minster porch at 10 a.m. Planned events for Spring/early Summer Dusk Moth Watch to be organised by Michael Pearson with Great Yarmouth Naturalists. Visit to Earlham Road Cemetery in Norwich to be organised by Paul Davies. More information about both events will be provided in the next newsletter. Paul had had several articles about Great Yarmouth Cemeteries published in the National Federation of Cemetery Friends newsletter. The NFCF has an excellent website, with lots of interesting and useful articles. See cemeteryfriends.org.uk/articles/ On behalf of the Friends, Ken contributed to the Minster Christmas Tree and Crib Festival with an entry hung with decorations created out of rubbish found in the Cemeteries, which was highly commended. Committee The committee voted in at the AGM held at the Priory on the 26th November 2014 is as follows: Paul Davies (Chair), Penny Larson (Treasurer and Membership), Bridget Heriz (Secretary), Ken McCullough and Michael Pearson (Working Party Foremen). The annual membership fee remains £5, or £3 for pensioners and those on benefit. Please send subscriptions to Penny Larson, 13 Osborne Avenue, Great Yarmouth, NR30 4EE.
