Newtown High School is a Flemish Renaissance Revival-style building in the Elmhurst neighborhood of Queens. This educational property has been serving its community since the original wooden schoolhouse was constructed in 1886. It became an exclusive secondary school in 1910 and achieved landmark status in 2003. The current building is the result of multiple expansion and renovation projects that were executed over the course of 60 years. Several architects contributed to these additions, including Boring & Tilton and Walter C. Martin. In 1917, the169-foot central tower was designed and incorporated by C.B.J. Snyder, Architect & Superintendent of School Buildings for the New York Department of Education. Today, Newtown High School is home to approximately 3,000 students and faculty members. Notable alumni include comedian Don Rickles and actor Carroll O’Connor.
