Stephens and our Internal Medicine Service. Pets with critical, complex or chronic conditions can benefit from the advanced training and skill of our board-certified internal medicine specialist. Using high-tech diagnostic equipment and the latest medical treatments available, our internal medicine team is dedicated to giving your pet the best chance for restored health and well-being. The care provided by our specialist will complement and coordinate with the services of your family veterinarian. If your pet’s diagnosis is known, our internist can confirm the diagnosis and make treatment recommendations, giving you peace of mind. If a diagnosis is elusive or therapy is not proving effective, our internist may be better able to reach a diagnosis or adjust the treatment plan to improve results and return your pet to good health or manage their chronic illness. The Internal Medicine Service focuses on diagnosing and treating diseases of the internal systems, such as kidney failure, digestive issues, hormonal problems, seizures, and diabetes. Your family veterinarian might refer you to us if your pet has: Anemia and bleeding disorders Chronic vomiting or diarrhea Complicated pancreatic disease Chronic coughing, nasal discharge, and other breathing problems Endocrine disease (diabetes, thyroid disease, Cushing’s disease, calcium imbalance) Infectious disease Kidney or bladder disease Liver disease Unexplained weight loss or weight gain Our internist will perform a complete and thorough physical examination. Based on the initial findings, additional testing may be suggested. Depending on your pet’s condition, diagnostic testing or treatments may include: Advanced laboratory testing of tissue and blood samples Endoscopy: Upper GI endoscopy, colonoscopy, bronchoscopy (airway), rhinoscopy (nasal), cystoscopy (bladder) Imaging, including digital radiographs, ultrasound, and CT scan Intravenous nutrition (TPN) Stomach or esophageal feeding tube Bone marrow evaluation Ultrasound-guided biopsy procedures The highly trained, compassionate nurses at Newtown Veterinary Specialists monitor patients around-the-clock so they’re never left unattended during an overnight hospital stay.
