Ngwiza Mnkandla THE WOMAN AT THE WELL 5 After the Samaritan woman, we stopped with Jesus! Now lets visit with the disciples. We are told they left Jesus at the well while they went into the city to buy some food. Upon their return with the food, they are shocked to find Him in deep conversation with a woman. What was the plot here? Why did they leave Him behind? Was the idea for him not to be contaminated by staying out of Samaria completely? And why were did they marvel that He was talking to a woman? Despite the time they had spent with Jesus, the disciples still didnt get it! They didnt understand who they were dealing with nor did they understand His mission! The old prejudices within them arose....this was not only a Samaritan, but she was a woman! Even amongst the Jewish race, the men looked down upon the women. In the temple, there was a section reserved for women and children....far from the real action! Thats why Paul commands the women of his day to ask questions at home because it was disruptive for women to ask their husbands questions across the isles. The disciples here, show the attitude of the Jews to the Samaritans and to women. Its amazing what religion does. Amazing how we can be so close to the source of life and yet be so prejudiced. Some of the most hardened people are sitting in our churches. Apartheid was supported by some devout Christians. Today, we are too smart to engage in open hostility, we just do not engage with those we look down upon. We can be sitting next to them in church on Sunday mornings but for all we care, they are as good as non existent! Here is Christ going out of His way to find this woman who would be a doorway to winning the city of Samaria and yet here are the disciples absolutely shell shocked to find Him speaking to her! Before we condemn them, lets look at the mirror to see if we carry any prejudices still! How fervent is your love for the lost, the marginalized and those on the edge of society? Apathy and indifference toward people whom Christ died for is a sin.
