Niger State Government Discovers 7000 Ghost Students, Realizes N125Million --------------- --------------- --------------- --------------- -------------- Niger State Government has realized N125Million from the list of over 7,000 ghost students discovered from the series of verification exercises carried out to sanitize its scholarship scheme. Speaking at the weekly post-Exco media briefing held at Government House, Minna, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Dr. Mohammed Bashar Nuhu said the state government paid N296, 085, 970 to 23,669 students in 2011 stressing that the figure was pruned down through the internal verification carried out by the board to 20,028 students in 2012. According to the Commissioner, after the biometric audit and the e-payment introduced to sanitize the system, an ATM card was issued to the students to further eliminate ghost students and those who deliberately refused to graduate. He stated that the exercise had yielded positive result as the number of eligible students was reduced to 14,741 adding that government paid N170, 480, 000 as scholarships in 2013. Dr. Mohammed Bashar Nuhu also disclosed that the 2014 bursary amounting to N94Million was ready and that payment would commence within the next two weeks. The Commissioner said the State Governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu had approved that the funds realized from the students verification exercise be used to increase bursary for students studying Medicine and Pharmacy. He announced that a website with high security features was to be developed, within the Management Information System of the state scholarship board, to register and screen applicant students online for scholarship.
