Nigeria, a country well over 300,000 square miles in area, is roughly comparable to North Australia in geography and climate. Being nearer the equator however, Nigeria has a wider belt of tropical forest in the coastal area, and the interior climate is considerably modified by a greater range in elevation—from the coast, the general level of the country rises steadily to an average level of over 2,500 feet in the Northern area. The country is also roughly trisected by the Niger-Benue river system, a feature that would be a welcome addition to the North Australian scene. Nevertheless the landscape in some areas, particularly the savannah country of North Nigeria, is remarkably similar to the savannahs of Queensland and the Northern Territory.
