Nigeria has nine kidney transplant centres -Health minister The Federal Government on Tuesday stated that the number of centres offering kidney transplant had shot up to nine this year. It said two private hospitals have joined the existing seven teaching hospitals already on the ground. The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, who stated this during the 2014 Ministerial Platform in Abuja, said the centres were expected to increase their capacity but were “hampered by finance. The only thing stopping them is funding.” He also gave kudos to the National Center Disease Control for acting as the “brigade that fought Ebola Virus Disease”. St Nicholas Hospital in Lagos along with View Point and Garki Hospital Abuja are the two latest private hospitals where kidney transplants and open heart surgeries could be performed. A total 40 other centres also offer kidney dialysis, required to manage end stage kidney disorder in the absence of a transplant. According to him, more surgeries could become accessible when they become covered by health insurance, adding that the National Health Insurance Scheme was working hard to expand its coverage. While frowning on what he described as the politicisation of issues in the health sector, the Chukwu stressed that the Federal Government provided the necessary leadership that resulted in Nigeria recording an early control of EVD that had killed thousands in other countries.
