Nigerian Military Claims Killing of Top Extremist Associated Press (08/13/13) Umar, Haruna; Faul, Michelle Two military commanders from neighboring states in northeastern Nigeria have announced that they killed Momodu Bama, who is said to be the second-in-command for the Boko Haram Islamic terror network. Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, the spokesman for the Joint Task Force in Borno state, told reporters that Bama has been killed by security forces in Bama town. Adamawa state Joint Task Force commander Lt. Col. Beyidi Marcus Martins claimed that his troops had killed Bama during a four-hour shootout at an extremist hideout in Mubi, more than 100 miles to the south of Bama. Though both commanders informed reporters of the alleged death on August 14, neither has provided any evidence and there is no way to verify the majority of statements made by the military in the three northeastern states, as they are under a state of emergency. There was a bounty of $156,250 on the head of Bama, who was also called Mohammed Bama.
