Born in Northern Nigeria of Muslim parents, Balewa was Educated as a teacher. Entered Politics in 1947 & became a member of the Northern Regions House of Assembly and in 1951 was Elected to the Federal House of Representatives. He was a founder & Deputy President of the Northern Peoples Congress. Muslim by Religion. He was appointed Prime Minister of the Nigerian Federation in 1957, & after Independence (1960) He remained in that Post. He was killed in the January 16, 1966 military coup.
