Nigerians react: Confab delegates’ list March 16 Politics top the list: Many of the delegates are past or present politicians. We don’t need more politicians as delegates. We need men and women that will not place politics over national interest. I strongly believe that we need a conference, but I am not convinced that the delegates for the conference will produce the desired result for the youth. — Sola Afolabi Youths not enough on the list: Though the list of delegates is full of experienced men and women, I’m surprised that the youth are not well represented. This confab needs a blend of old and new perspectives. I hope they will put aside political, religious, and professional sentiments and concentrate on how to redirect the country on the right path. — Anita Dabor List lacks youth representation: I think the list is full of old people. The youth should be part of the decision-making process in this country. When it involves making decisions for the future, the youth should play a huge role, not just old people. The future of Nigeria is in her youth. — Ayula Ogunyomi We don’t need ex-leaders on the list: I don’t understand why we elect leaders who can’t lead in the first place. Why are they in office if they can’t take responsibility of the office? Although I agree we need experienced leaders to talk at the conference, they shouldn’t be at the forefront of such a conference. —Oluwafunminiyi Alalade It’s full of old politicians: The national confab list is made up mostly of old politicians responsible for our national problems. The same set of old politicians who have milked the country. One only hopes that the conference will bring about positive results and not an avenue to share the commonwealth. — Lanre Jimoh List questionable: I am not satisfied with the names of some individuals on the confab list. I don’t know what was considered before choosing them as elder statesmen. — Godwin Onyekachi Delegates should be competent: I think everybody should be included because it is called a national conference. Each person will have a blueprint on how the country can work. No ethnic group or tribe is better than the other. We shouldn’t deliberate on today alone. Tomorrow matters also. We must understand that the tiniest tribe today will grow tomorrow and for us not to create problems tomorrow, their interests need to be considered today. All delegates should be competent, people with credible character and capacity. With God on our side, I hope we will have a successful conference. — Segun Banjo Nothing wrong with the list: It’s quite clear, with our diversity in mind, we may not get a generally accepted list of delegates as it were. So, I see nothing wrong with the list, save for a few names, which I was surprised to see on the list. The conference, I think, shouldn’t specify a no-go area. The conference should champion the cause of Nigeria afresh. — Soji Ojerinde List is complete : The list is quite exhaustive but I’m more concerned about the success of the conference itself. If it will take many people to resolve the issues before the conference, so be it. — Aanu Bello It’s full of old people: The national conference delegate list is filled with old people. I am sure the same ideas that got us where we are will be the same ones they will propose. However, I think we should be optimistic because I really want to be proven wrong. —FeyiOladewa They should contribute meaningfully: I hope the delegates will contribute meaningfully to ensure that the long-awaited change begins through the national conference. I hope it will be a starting point to the uplifting of our great nation. —Yinka Okeleye Same old people on list: I think the list is full of names that I refer to as “the same people.” But I pray the end will justify the means. — Uzoije Ihediwa List doesn’t reflect our interest: It is nothing but a political charade and jamboree. The President is a politician and he is only trying to use this confab to rehabilitate some old politicians who have become irrelevant. There should be an act of parliament that will enable us have a referendum to debate the destiny of Nigeria. There is no country where the future of the people is decided without the people. There is no country where a constitution is built and imposed on the people without their input. In every democratic setting, the people are the most important factor. It is a pity that things are different here. They can’t just assemble the same set of politicians who have kept Nigeria down since inception and tell us they suddenly have the solution to the same country they have made a mess of. Nigeria belongs to all of us, not only to those set of old men I have been hearing about since the ‘70s. — Ugochukwu Chikezie Copyright PUNCH.
